Dragon’s Blood Punch

This is built entirely on colour: cranberry gives a red so dark that in a glass bowl it looks convincingly sinister. Frozen berries stand in for ice — they chill just as well without watering the punch down over the evening. The ginger ale goes in last and is not stirred, or the bubbles are gone in five minutes.

Ingredients

  • What to use instead

Soda water or lemonade replaces the ginger ale; add a spoonful of fresh ginger juice to keep the bite.

Makes: about 2.6 l

Method

  1. Step 1: Chill everything first

The juices and the ginger ale need at least 3 hours in the fridge. It is the only way to serve a cold punch without ice diluting it.

  2. Step 2: Mix the juices

Combine the cranberry and apple juices with the lemon juice in a large clear bowl. Taste: cranberry can be very sharp, in which case add more apple.

  3. Step 3: Add the berries

Tip in the frozen berries straight from the freezer. They sink, then start rising a few minutes later, which looks exactly right.

  4. Step 4: Pour the ale

Just before serving, pour the ginger ale slowly down the side of the bowl. Do not stir — one pass with a spoon is enough to flatten it.

  5. Step 5: Serve

Float the lime rounds on top and serve at once with a ladle. Chill the bowl beforehand so it goes to the table cold.

Tips & variations

  • Tip

For sinister ice, freeze cranberries or pieces of lime into the cubes. They melt more slowly than plain ice and do not spoil the look.

  • Variation

For a green potion, use apple juice and two drops of green colouring instead of cranberry — same drink, more laughter.

  • Swap

Soda water or lemonade replaces the ginger ale; add a spoonful of fresh ginger juice to keep the bite.

  • Storage

Mix the juice base a day ahead and keep it chilled, adding the ale as guests arrive. Once mixed, the punch goes flat within two hours.
