Apple Vampire Teeth
The rare Halloween treat you can hand a child without a second thought: apple, nut butter, almonds. Use red-skinned apples — the skin is what makes the lips, and without it the whole joke falls apart. Cut them thin: a thick wedge will not close, and the mouth gapes for no reason.

What to use instead
Almond butter or any thick nut spread works. Chocolate spread holds too, but the teeth barely show against the brown.

Method
-
Step 1: Slice the apples
Halve the apples, cut out the cores and slice each half into 4 thin wedges about 7 mm thick, leaving the skin on.
-
Step 2: Dress with lemon
Sprinkle the wedges with lemon juice and toss. Apple browns within minutes, and brown lips stop being funny and start being off-putting.
-
Step 3: Spread the butter
Spread an even 3–4 mm layer of peanut butter on the flat side of every second wedge, stopping short of the edges.
-
Step 4: Set the teeth
Push flaked almonds into the butter point upwards, in a neat row along the edge — four or five per wedge.
-
Step 5: Close the mouths
Top with a second wedge, skin side out on both, and press gently. The teeth should stick out between the halves.
-
Step 6: Serve at once
Lay the mouths on a board, skin upward. Do not wait: within an hour the butter takes up moisture from the apple and the teeth start to lean.
Tips & variations
-
Tip
The butter has to be thick. Runny natural peanut butter that separates will not hold a single tooth — pour the oil off first.
-
Variation
Almonds give neat white teeth; pumpkin seeds give crooked greenish ones, which suits a vampire even better.
-
Swap
Almond butter or any thick nut spread works. Chocolate spread holds too, but the teeth barely show against the brown.

Storage
This belongs to the last fifteen minutes before guests arrive. Slice the apples ahead if you keep them in lemon water, but assemble at the last minute.
