Baby First Foods

Courgette and Pea Purée for Babies

Courgette brings the softness, peas bring the colour and a little sweetness. A good first mix once your baby has met each vegetable on its own.

Ingredients

Makes: 8 baby portions

Method

  1. Step 1: Chop the courgette

Wash the courgette, trim the ends and cut it into small cubes. A young courgette does not need peeling.

  2. Step 2: Cook together

Bring a pan of water to the boil, add the courgette and frozen peas and cook for about 8 minutes, until completely soft.

  3. Step 3: Blend

Drain, let it cool a little and blend until smooth. For a very new eater, push it through a sieve to catch the pea skins.

  4. Step 4: Loosen if needed

If the purée is thick, stir in a spoonful of breast milk or formula. Cool to lukewarm before feeding.

Tips & variations

  • Tip

No salt or sugar, in the food or in the cooking water: babies under one do not need either. The taste comes from the vegetable itself.

  • Storage

Spoon the cooled purée into an ice-cube tray, freeze, then tip the cubes into a bag. Thaw in the fridge, heat until piping hot, cool again, and never refreeze.

  • Tip

Offer this once courgette and peas have each been on the menu alone: if there is a reaction, you will know which food caused it.

  • Tip

Offer each new food on its own for a few days running, and check with your health visitor or paediatrician about allergies, age and texture.
