Steamed Apple and Pear Fingers

Not everything has to be a purée: soft fingers your baby holds in a fist teach chewing and hand-eye coordination. Pear takes longer, so it goes in the steamer first.

Ingredients

Makes: 4 baby portions

Method

  1. Step 1: Cut the fingers

Cut the apple and pear into wedges about the length of an adult finger, so your baby can grip one with half sticking out of their fist.

  2. Step 2: Steam the pear

Bring water to the boil under a steamer or sieve and steam the pear for 8 minutes.

  3. Step 3: Add the apple

Add the apple and steam for 2 minutes more, until the fruit is soft but holds its shape.

  4. Step 4: Check the texture

Cool and test: a ready finger squashes easily between your thumb and forefinger.

Tips & variations

  • Tip

Always stay with your baby during finger food and sit them upright. No hard raw apple at this age: only soft, cooked pieces.

  • Variation

Serve with a spoonful of plain full-fat yoghurt for dipping.

  • Storage

Any leftover fruit makes a snack for the grown-ups: steamed fingers do not keep, so cook them fresh.

  • Tip

Offer each new food on its own for a few days running, and check with your health visitor or paediatrician about allergies, age and texture.
