Ingredients

Makes: 8 baby portions

Method

  1. Step 1: Check ripeness

A ripe avocado gives slightly under your thumb, and the banana should have a few brown freckles.

  2. Step 2: Slice the banana

Peel the banana and cut it into pieces straight into a bowl.

  3. Step 3: Prepare the avocado

Halve the avocado, remove the stone and scoop the flesh in with the banana.

  4. Step 4: Mash

Mash both with a fork, or blend until completely smooth, with no lumps.

  5. Step 5: Serve straight away

Serve at once, before the avocado starts to brown.

Tips & variations

  • Storage

Avocado and banana brown fast: press cling film onto the surface of leftovers, keep in the fridge and use the same day. Do not freeze.

  • Tip

Both fruits need to be properly ripe: an unripe avocado will not mash and tastes bitter.

  • Variation

Stir in a spoonful of plain full-fat yoghurt for a creamier mash.

  • Tip

Offer each new food on its own for a few days running, and check with your health visitor or paediatrician about allergies, age and texture.
