Potato and Leek Mash for Babies
Leek is milder than onion and turns almost sweet once cooked. With potato it is a familiar grown-up pairing, minus the salt.

Method
-
Step 1: Cook the potato
Cut the potato into cubes, add to boiling water and cook for 10 minutes.
-
Step 2: Add the leek
Rinse the leek well between its layers, where grit hides, dice it finely and add it to the potato. Cook for 5 minutes more.
-
Step 3: Mash
When both are completely soft, drain, add the milk and mash until smooth.
-
Step 4: Cool
If the mash is still thick, add a little more milk. Cool to lukewarm before feeding.
Tips & variations
-
Tip
No salt or sugar, in the food or in the cooking water: babies under one do not need either. The taste comes from the vegetable itself.
-
Storage
Spoon the cooled purée into an ice-cube tray, freeze, then tip the cubes into a bag. Thaw in the fridge, heat until piping hot, cool again, and never refreeze.
-
Variation
For a creamier texture, mash in a teaspoon of unsalted butter with the potato.
-
Tip
A little cow’s milk is fine in cooking from 6 months, but not as a drink until one year. Offer each new food on its own for a few days running, and check with your health visitor or paediatrician about allergies, age and texture.
