Baby First Foods

Broccoli Purée for Babies

Broccoli is not sweet, and that is exactly why it is a good first taste: your baby gets used to a flavour that is nothing like milk. It takes eight minutes and one head gives a week of portions.

Ingredients

Makes: 7 baby portions

Method

  1. Step 1: Prepare the broccoli

Cut off the thick stalk, break the head into small florets and rinse them well under running water.

  2. Step 2: Cook until soft

Bring a pan of water to the boil, add the broccoli and cook for about 8 minutes, until a floret crushes easily with a fork. Do not salt the water.

  3. Step 3: Blend

Drain and blend until smooth, or mash with a fork. If it is too thick, loosen it with a little breast milk or formula.

  4. Step 4: Cool

Let the purée cool to lukewarm and test the temperature on yourself before serving.

Tips & variations

  • Tip

No salt or sugar, in the food or in the cooking water: babies under one do not need either. The taste comes from the vegetable itself.

  • Storage

Spoon the cooled purée into an ice-cube tray, freeze, then tip the cubes into a bag. Thaw in the fridge, heat until piping hot, cool again, and never refreeze.

  • Variation

Once your baby is ready for finger food, cook the florets for 6–8 minutes and serve them whole: a little tree with a stalk is easy to hold.

  • Tip

Offer each new food on its own for a few days running, and check with your health visitor or paediatrician about allergies, age and texture.
